Heating pads are designed to provide local relief to aching muscles, low circulation areas and any part of the body which gets cold. By creating a warm surface area on the skin, the heating pad will bring warmth and relief to suffering body parts. Heating pads are also an important part of any emergency or home medical kit.
There are several types of heating pads available.
Chemical Heating Pads
Usually these contain two components which when mixed generate heat. Some chemical heating pads have an adhesive which can be used to set the heating pad in place. Others are designed to be moved around an affected area, transferring warmth and increasing circulation. A chemical heating pad does not require external power and can be carried in a jacket pocket for use during cold weather.

Using a heating Pad Typically the heating pad is squeezed to crush the chemicals contained within the pad. Warmth may last from a few minutes to a few hours. In situations of extreme cold, a heating pad can be used to warm the hands or placed inside a heat containing area, such as next to the chest under a jacket.
By keeping the body core warm, the effects of cold weather can be diminished allowing better functioning. Being cold sucks, having a couple of chemical heating pads nearby can do wonders for keeping warm. Some chemical pads can be reactivated, others have a one time use.
Electrical Heating Pads
Electrical heating pads may be battery operated, or more commonly draw power directly from an outlet. Newer models of electrical heating pads can actually store solar energy. Heating pads of this type may be contoured or flat and come in a variety of sizes. By using electricity to generate heat, the electrical heating pad can be powered for long periods of times. It is generally recommended that the pad be warmed prior to being placed in contact with the body to limit any potential adverse effects of emf radiation. Electrical heating pads typically can get quite warm and are useful when attempting to warm deep tissue areas. It is a good idea to follow the manufacturers safety warnings to avoid injury of the chance of fire. Always be aware of an electric heating pad if it is plugged in for any length of time.
Buy Heating Pads Choosing the right heating pad for your needs depends on what your needs are. A chronic area may benefit from repeated and extended treatment. Localized muscle pain such as that often found in the lower back may require a pad which can be attached directly to the body part. If you are where there is limited access to power, a chemical heating pad is probably the best option.
