Everything is on fire!
Fire suppression equipment and systems types
why we need them and what they work best for
Reactions to fire
When something is on fire, reactions range from horror to chants of burn baby burn! There is nothing like the curling flames consuming an object to bring out the pyromaniac in all of us. Man's fascination with fire goes back centuries, mans fascination with fighting fire probably happened the first time that a fire set his caveman suit into a blistering inferno of burning animal pelts.
Fire Suppression
Primitive fire suppression involved a caveman running screaming into a lake. Soon after the bucket was invented the fire brigade began.
More modern techniques include halon suppressors and similar devices which literally suck all of the oxygen out of a room. By depriving fire of one of the three crucial elements of oxygen, fuel and spark, any fire can be suppressed.
Metal fires
are more dangerous! substances such as magnesium create chemical reactions when burning that are resistant to water. Oil fires have similar problems. This is why specialized tools such as
Chemical fire suppressors
are used. Water is a traditional deterrent to fire but is limited in the types of fire it can handle, but a layer of specialized powders or foams are often more effective.
Fire alarms
If your house is on fire you may not realize it until esape is impossible. Investing in a good fire alarm and checking the batteries is a good idea. The greatest hazard of fire is smoke inhalation, so having a gas mask can also be a lifesaver. Most people succomb to the smoke before teh fire gets to them.
Burning Temperatures
The temperature at which things burn has been the subject of both reckless expirimentors and rigorous scientific investigation by apparently mad scientists. When people say something is on fire, they are generally indicating it is very hot. How hot? We'll leave that up to the mad scientists.
